DTF Printer

Description

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printer is a digital printing device that first prints a design onto a dedicated PET transfer film and then applies the graphic to various fabrics or rigid surfaces by heat pressing. It is regarded as a complementary—or even alternative—solution to DTG (Direct-to-Garment), screen printing, sublimation and other traditional methods, especially suitable for short-run, multi-style and personalized production.

Workflow

Image → Design → Print → Powder → Heat Press → Finished Product

1.Select a picture
Choose or shoot a high-resolution image on the computer as the original artwork.

>>

2.Design patterns in PS software
Use Photoshop or similar software to remove backgrounds, add a white-ink underbase, arrange layouts, mirror the image, and generate the print file.

>>

3.Print on the printer
Start the DTF printer and jet CMYK+W inks directly onto the PET film. At this stage the ink is still wet.

>>

4.Shake the hot-melt powder
While the ink is still wet, evenly sprinkle hot-melt adhesive powder over the film; shake off the excess, leaving powder only on the inked areas.

>>

5.Heat-press the sample

Send the powdered film through a curing oven or use a heat press at about 160 °C to melt the powder into a transparent adhesive layer; then align the film with the fabric and press again for 10–15 s.

>>

6.Complete
After cooling, peel away the film—the graphic has fully transferred to the fabric, delivering vibrant colors and wash-fastness. A finished piece is done.

Q&A

Q: What is the difference between DTF and DTG printers?

A: DTG jets ink directly onto the garment and requires pre-treatment; DTF prints the graphic on PET film first, then adds powder, cures and heat-presses. DTF has no cotton-content restrictions, prints both light and dark colors without pre-treatment, but adds the two extra steps of film and powder.

Q: On which materials/products can DTF print?

A: In theory, “any fabric that can withstand heat-pressing”: cotton, polyester, nylon, spandex, denim, canvas, leather; finished products include T-shirts, hoodies, jeans, swimwear, polo shirts, caps, shoes, cushions and more.

Q: Can dark garments be printed directly? Is weeding / cutting needed?

A: Yes—white ink underbase makes it possible. DTF is a “full-area transfer,” so no weeding or cutting is required.

Q: What equipment is needed for a complete DTF production line?

A: DTF printer + automatic shaker / manual powdering + curing oven or oven + heat press. For roll-to-roll models, powdering and curing are usually integrated into one unit.

Q: For a beginner, should I buy a “stand-alone” or an “all-in-one package”?

A: Zero-experience users are advised to buy the package: printer + powder-shaking & curing all-in-one + heat press + initial consumables (film, powder, ink). The supplier will set parameters and provide training in one go.
