The longevity of DTG (direct-to-garment) printing depends on three distinct layers of "durability":
1.Ink shelf life (unopened)
Factory-sealed, pigment-based DTG inks are normally guaranteed for 12-24 months if they are kept at 15-30 °C and 40-60 % RH.
White ink is the exception: the heavy pigment settles quickly, so most suppliers only warrant 6-9 months and recommend using it even sooner
2.Ink life after the seal is broken
Once the cartridge or bottle is opened, oxidation and moisture pick-up begin. The usual industry guideline is "consume within 6 months"; some houses shorten that to 90 days for white or fluorescent inks
Storage temperature should stay between 10 °C and 30 °C, away from direct sun, with the container tightly closed and the white ink gently agitated every few days to re-disperse pigment
3.Print life on the garment
A properly pre-treated, fully cured DTG print produced with modern pigmented inks (e.g., Kornit Neopigment, Splashjet, Epson F-series) will survive 50–100 domestic wash cycles before noticeable fading occurs, provided the garment is washed inside-out with cold water and mild detergent and is not tumble-dried on high heat
On 100 % cotton or cotton-rich blends the print often remains attractive for 2–3 years of normal wear; on polyester or triblends the same ink may fade ~20 % sooner because of fibre-related ink migration
In short, keep the ink "fresh" (use within 6 months of opening), cure the garment correctly, and teach your customer how to wash it, and a DTG print should look lively for roughly 50-100 washes-about the practical life of the T-shirt itself.
